Building Resilience Through VSLA Approach

Gede’s livelihood support project continued to yield positive impacts within vulnerable households in rural communities of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kebbi and Sokoto states.

A community of people living with and affected by leprosy and mental illness in Yangoji District, FCT, recounted the economic transformation they are witnessing from the business foundations Gede laid through the VSLA project in 2023-2024.

VSLA group members (160 farmers), have increased and diversified their income, through the VSLA Model. The main impact is the significant increase in farm yields and sales of farm products. The Project provided training and agricultural items including improved seedlings, herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers to young farmers.

Members were trained on ways to increase their income streams through active participation in the VSLA group activities. Over 12 months, a remarkable increase in the farm yields have secured long term income opportunities to households.

It is expected that more groups will be evolved; as the intervention is showing some scalable outcomes.
